About the films:
THE BLOB, 1988, Sony Repertory, 95 min, USA, Dir: Chuck Russell. Screenwriter Frank Darabont (THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION) and director Chuck Russell (THE MASK) teamed up for this exceptionally scary (and exceptionally gory) remake of the 1950s cult favorite, resulting in a rare reboot that’s superior to the original. Cheerleader Shawnee Smith and rebel biker Kevin Dillon team up to take on an amorphous substance that engulfs an entire small town while shadowy government operatives try to figure out how to harness its power; the substance itself – the blob of the title – is a marvel of state-of-the art 1980s special effects that still holds up today.

THE FLY, 1986, 20th Century Fox, 100 min, USA, Dir: David Cronenberg. This new version of the 1958 sci-fi hit isn’t just a remake but a complete reimagining, with director David Cronenberg mixing in his own sensibilities about organic life and its startling mutability. Teletransporter inventor Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) inadvertently mixes his genes with a house fly’s when he decides to use himself as test subject. His future as a human being, including his romance with science writer Veronica (Geena Davis), changes forever as he begins a slow slide into a gooey half-man/half-insect, complete with superpowers and messianic delusions of grandeur. Chris Walas and Stephen Dupuis won Oscars in 1987 for Best Make-Up.

About the films:
John Saxon Remembered.
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, 1984, Warner Bros., 92 min, USA, Dir: Wes Craven. Wes Craven created one of his most famous movie milestones with this supremely entertaining horror opus, melding influences from Polanski to Buñuel to Argento to achieve a bizarrely subversive box office hit. NIGHTMARE went on to become a certifiable goldmine of a franchise and ushered in surrealism to the masses. Dead child-killer/dream demon Freddie Krueger (Robert Englund) proves a formidable homicidal anti-hero but finds a more than worthy opponent in feisty, brainy teen Heather Langenkamp. With Johnny Depp, John Saxon and Ronee Blakely.

SCREAM, 1996, Paramount, 111 min, USA, Dir: Wes Craven. Director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson re-invented and revitalized the slasher genre with this modern horror classic, which manages to be funny, clever and scary, as a fright-masked knife maniac stalks high-school students in middle-class suburbia. A Saturn and MTV Movie Award winner that spawned 3 big-screen sequels and a TV series, the box office hit provides both tension and self-parody as the body count mounts – but the victims aren’t always the ones you’d expect. Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette and Drew Barrymore are among the stars contending with the lethal Ghostface.
