Double Feature: MY LIFE WITH NICOLAS WINDING REFN
The story of an Muay boxing American expatriate (Ryan Gosling) forced to seek revenge for the murder of his brother in Thailand, Nicolas Winding Refn’s brutal drama is the lovechild of noir and violent pulp.
You have to love Nicolas Winding Refn – after Drive became a critical and commercial success instead of following it up with something similar he did a dazzling about turn and released a film which divided critics and fans alike.
Drenched in deep reds and neon blues which recall the finest Italian Giallos from Bava and Argento and with only the barest dialogue spoken by its star Ryan Gosling, it’s Cliff Martinez’s moody, dark and mesmerising score that pushes the film along and helps it hit many emotional highs and lows.
It’s brutal, uncompromising and beautiful and to be able to see this on the Egyptians’ giant screen is going to be incredible.
