Utilizing brain-implant technology, corporate assassin Tasya Vos hijacks the minds of other people, using their bodies as vessels to carry out hitjobs. Skilled at her job, she nonetheless struggles to balance the brutal demands of her profession with her slowly dissolving family life, particularly when it comes to invasive memories and urges. With POSSESSOR Brandon Cronenberg solidifies his position in the annals of film history by making the kind of assured, brilliant, and explosive film that other directors can only dream of. Featuring an eye-popping central performance by Andrea Riseborough and brilliant support from the likes of Christopher Abbott, Sean Bean and Jennifer Jason Leigh, POSSESSOR explores a world of espionage, assassination, and the morally bankrupt mind-control tech that binds them in this not-too-far-afoot (or distant) future.
Bathed in lush somatic hues with astonishing work from director of photography Karim Hussain, POSSESSOR expounds on Cronenberg’s grim vision of the tech-enhanced blurring of reality’s very seams explored in his 2019 prequel short “Please Speak Continuously and Describe Your Experiences as They Come …”. Special mention must go to Dan Martin’s special effects which fill the screen with horrors hitherto unseen.
A low-rumbling threat of a movie that explodes into operatic violence, POSSESSOR is easily one of the best genre films of 2020 and of the last decade –vicious, ghastly, unrelenting, this is the work of a singular creator who delivers arresting thrills like no other. No body is safe.
